  1. Day 1 Arrival and briefing in Arusha

On arrival, and after a meet-n-greet session, you’ll be transferred to the safari lodge, located on the beautiful slopes of Mt. Meru. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, getting to know your travel companions and prepping for the adventure that awaits. Before the day ends, there will be a pre-climb briefing at the hotel, an equipment check and our guides will also confirm that you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance.

  2. Day 2 To Machame Huts

The climb starts from Machame Gate (at 1800M) after a short walk through the attractive banana and coffee farms of Machame village. The path follows a ridge through the dense montane forest. This is the richest forested area on the mountain, and also the zone where 96 % of the water on Kilimanjaro originates from. On sunny days, and especially in the dry season, this section is very
    lush and beautiful.

You’ll be stopping for lunch at ‘Halfway Clearing’, a small opening in the trees. The climb then continues to the camp near the ruins of Machame Hut (at 3000M), from where you may get your first close look at the glaciated dome of Kibo if the evening clouds permit.

The total trek takes 6-8 hours.

  3. Day 3 Shira Plateau

A shorter day that begins by climbing up a steep ridge to reach a small semicircular cliff known as Picnic Rock. There are excellent views of Kibo and the jagged rim of Shira Plateau from the cliff, and it is a good resting point too! The trail continues to reach the Shira Plateau where you camp near Shira Huts (at 3840M), the point that provides some of the most stunning views on Kilimanjaro.

The total trek takes 4-6 hours.

  4. Day 4 The Great Barranco Valley

A morning of gentle ascent and panoramic views, leaving the moorland plateau behind to walk on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. After lunch near the Lava Tower Junction (at 4550M), we descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco valley (at 3900M), sheltered by towering cliffs and with extensive views of the plains far below.

The total trek takes 5-7 hours.

  5. Day 5 Karanga Camp

A steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern Icefields. From there it’s only a short distance to our camp at Karanga (at 4,000M), the last water point. You’ll be resting here or you could also opt to go for a short acclimatisation walk in the afternoon, up the valley, above the camp.

The total climb takes about 4-5 hours.

  6. Day 6 The Barafu Campsite

A short but steep climb out of Karanga to reach Mweka Junction (at 4150M). Then the troupe climbs steadily to reach the Barafu campsite (at 4,600M) and continue to the plateau at the bottom of the South-East Valley (at 4,800M). The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before an early night.

The total climb takes 3-4 hours.

  7. Day 7 Mweka Forest Camp

The final climb starts by torchlight at about 1 a.m., so that the group can be up on the Crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take you to Stella Point (at 5735M), in about 5-6 hours.

After a short rest to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. If your energy permits, you can opt to make the 2-hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (at 5896M), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area.

The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast, and after some refreshments, you’ll continue to descend to reach the final Mweka forest camp.

The climb and descent take a total of 13-15 hours.

  8. Day 8 Mweka Park Gate

On Day 8, a sustained descent through lovely forests with lush undergrowth will take you to Mweka National Park Gate (at 1650M). You’ll be transferred to the lodge.

    It takes about 3-4 hours.

  9. Day 9 Departure

Say goodbye! You’ll be transferred to the airport for departure.
